  1. RELAX. It is probably easier said than done, but remember that you have trained hard, sacrificed a lot, and are already prepared. One exercise suggested by a cardiologist to control heart rate is called 7/7/7. It is a breathing exercise that employs long and slow inspiration for 7 seconds, holding that breath for 7 seconds, then slowly releasing it for 7 seconds. No shallow breaths here, but rather full-belly diaphragmatic breaths. Do this a few times pre-race to inspire relax yourself and calm your entire body.
  2. Change as little as possible. This goes from things as simple as your favourite pair of socks and sports top, to your favourite pre-race dinner and pre-race routine. Avoid binging on a spicy, hot dinner the night before if you don’t typically eat spicy, hot food.
  3. Beware the lure of the expo! If you are not careful, you will leave with everything from new running sneakers, to a new massage stick (why?). Make no mistake, this stuff is awesome and useful, but remember nothing new. Another thing to be aware of; avoid being on your feet for too long at the expo. The last thing you want is sore feet before the race even begins!
  4. Run Your Race! This one sounds easy, but can sometimes be more of a challenge. If you didn’t train to run a 340 marathon, don’t expect to run a 340 marathon. You know how long it took to run your weekly-long runs, your mile repeats, and your track intervals; so stick to the plan and enjoy the efforts you put forth. Our cells have a wonderful balance of electrolytes, and consuming too much water can cause a relative dilution of these, leaving you feeling flat and hyponatremia (low blood sodium). Also, consider salting your food a little extra in the days leading up to the race, as your body will surely need it.

One extra for good luck; eat breakfast! Your nerves will be firing, and the jitters will be real, but so is low blood sugar at mile 8! Just remember, nothing new! Stick to what you’ve done and what works. Have a blast
